The Grisi Siknis is a severe condition suffered mostly by the Miskitu population, frequent in the last 17 years in different Miskitu communities of Alto Wangki Bocay and the Autonomous Region of the North Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua (RACCN). It is recognized by the international manuals of psychiatry as a "syndrome linked to the Miskito culture" and studied by anthropology (see for example Dennis, 1981, 1985 and 1999 ↦).
From the indigenous perspective, it is related to socio-environmental conditions (community life and harmony in relation to the environment) and to an individual and collective spiritual imbalance (Henríquez, Chacón & Espinoza, 2016 ↦; and Martínez Cruz, in print ↦). |
The predominant narratives about the Grisi Siknis have reproduced an essentialist image / representation of the indigenous, which portrays the Miskitu people as backward, exotic and ahistorical and leaves little room for other visions that allow them to be considered as a social group, historical agent and producer of knowledge.
With the Other Visions: Visual Counter-Narratives About the Grisi Siknis research project we propose the production of an immersive audiovisual documentary that contributes to dismantling the vision reiterated by the public health system and the media, which portray the miskitu population affected by the Grisi Siknis as superstitious and in need people. We propose the use of 360 ° video technology, a digital audiovisual recording technique with several cameras located at the same point but from different angles; the result s a spherical panoramic video. Through special lenses and a compatible cell phone, the user views the video. Every movement of his head is recognized by the system, which immediately redirects the projection. It is as if we were in the center of a spherical screen inside which the video is projected. The 360 ° video produces sensations of immersion, by completely surrounding the spectator's body, and of presence, so that he feels that he has been transferred to the place where the action narrated in the audiovisual takes place. The immersive audiovisual documentary will be produced following the guidelines of community journalism. The research team will be a mere facilitator of the technology and production methodology, but it will be the Miskito communities and the traditional doctors and doctors who participate and decide on the script and contents of the documentary. |

To align the recording points of the camera and the external microphone, we put together a small structure that we call invention. For 360° inmersión we use Gear VR lenses and compatible cell phones. For the audiovisual edition, we use kdenlive and Adobe Premiere. For audio editing we also use Audacity. We complete the equipment with accessories such as rigid and flexible tripods, rechargeable batteries, memory cards and disks, connection cables and carrying cases. |
